History and Mission

In 1996, our founder Marcy Payne fulfilled her vision to establish Tennessee’s first no-kill animal shelter. At that time, Happy Tales Humane operated as a virtual shelter housing all animals in dedicated foster homes.

ln 2000, Happy Tales opened a shelter for cats in The Factory at Franklin. Dogs resided in foster homes and were available for adoption at the shelter on Saturdays.

In February of 2015, Happy Tales moved to a new shelter facility in the Village Shops at Berry Farms in Franklin. The facility includes a medical wing, intake area, adoption center and a retail space.

Each year we take in hundreds of animals from overcrowded animal shelters, hoarding situations, cruelty cases, and those found as strays or abandoned. These animals typically require medical attention including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and specialized medical care. It is critical that these animals receive the medical care needed to be healthy and ready to become a part of their new families.

We are dedicated to OUR MISSION of Providing humane, no-kill options for homeless and neglected animals in Middle Tennessee. It is our intent to find loving homes for all the animals that come into our care.
